MatheranMatheran- a tiny hill station of Maharashtra nestles in the lap of gigantic Sahayadri Range. Discovered by Hugh Poyntz Mallet, Collector of Thane district in 1850, the town is covered with thick dense forest and the age-old colonial buildings. This lovely spot was again revealed by lord Elphinstone who was the governor of Mumbai in 1855. Mesmerized by the unspoilt beauty of Mathern, he built his grand mansion and named it Elphinstone lodge. He also developed roadways and opened the first mountain railway in Mathern in 1907. Matheran is the only hill station in India where honking is strictly prohibited due to its echoing valleys.
