Chamba

Situated at a height of 996 m, Chamba is bounded by the snow-topped mountains and lofty hills. Raja Sahil Verman founded this town in 920 AD and named it after his daughter Champavati. Chamba is studded with many ancient temples and offers spectacular treks and perfect camping spots for adventure lovers.

Laxmi Narayan Temple
Built in the 10th century AD, Laxmi Narayan Temple complex houses six temples constructed in Hindu Shikara style of architecture. The temples are dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Shiva. Laxmi Narayan Temple complex is adorned with beautiful sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses.

Brijeshwari Devi Temple
Dedicated to Lord Durga, Brijeshwari Devi temple is known for the beautifully carved sculptors of Hindu deities.

Champavati Temple
The temple was built by the Raja Sahil Verman in the memory of his daughter Champavati. Champavati temple is built in the shikara style and is decked with intrictate stone carvings and the wheel roof. It is located behind the treasury building in Chamba.

Bhuri Singh Museum
Bhuri Singh Museum is named after the Raja Bhuri Singh of Chamba who donated his royal collection of paintings, antiques and other precious artifacts to the museum in order to preserve the rich heritage of Chamba. He also hired a famous British archaeologist and scholar as the first curator of the museum. Bhura Singh Museum displays the exquisite paintings of Kangra and Bisholi schools, ancient manuscripts, woodcarving, hill jewelry, musical instruments and the vibrant murals from Rangmahal.

Gandhi Gate
This bright orange gateway called Gandhi Gate was built in the year 1900 to welcome the viceroy of British Government, Lord Curzon.

Sui Mata Temple
Sui Mata temple is located between the Brijeshwari and Chamunda Devi temple. The temple is dedicated to the local princes Sui Mata who sacrificed her life for the people of chamba. The vibrant paintings on the walls of the temple depict the life story of Sui Mata.

By Road
The bus station in Chamba is located near the Chowgan. There are regular buses from Chamba to Bharmaur, Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Pathankot
